Ear Pinning in Fredericksburg, VA

What is Ear Pinning?

Ears that appear to protrude outward, are asymmetrical or misshapen, or look oversized can negatively impact your self-esteem, especially during childhood. Ear reshaping surgery (also known as otoplasty) is a cosmetic treatment that helps redefine the size, position, and shape of the ears to produce a pleasing look. Dr. Howard Heppe, Dr. Harold Bautista, and Dr. Pejman Aflaki are plastic surgeons in Fredericksburg, VA who have helped many adults and children overcome the embarrassment of showing their ears by undergoing this surgery. Regardless of the cosmetic issue, ear surgery at Plastic Surgery Services of Fredericksburg allows patients to show their faces at any angle with newfound confidence. If you or your child are concerned about the appearance of the ears, make an appointment to get more information on otoplasty.

How Does Ear Pinning Work?

Ear reshaping surgery is completed using a form of anesthesia. In most cases, the incision is made near the back of the ear or within the inner ear. Cartilage may be removed or added during this procedure to create a smaller or larger appearance. It is common for both ears to be addressed during treatment to make sure they appear symmetrical. After this, the incisions are closed with sutures and bandaged so they stay protected.

I am so pleased to share my enormous respect and admiration for Dr. Heppe and every one of the staff members at this medical facility. I was there to care for my friend having surgery. Not only was she treated compassionately and professionally during the entire experience, I was surprised that I, too, was given the same courtesy as her care partner. The appointments were on time, thorough, and informative. We were prepared with important information and immediate responses to any potential concerns we raised. When my friend experienced a difficulty, Dr. Heppe went beyond all expectations to assist her promptly and appropriately. We were reassured and comforted to know that every patient is treated "as the center of attention." I highly recommend the services of this extraordinary medical facility. We offer our highest gratitude for the way every one on the staff kindly contributed to make this time so amazing.

Dr. Aflaki and his staff are awesome. From answering all my questions at my consult, to spending extra time with me at my pre-op appt. He was very honest and I ended up changing my procedure. After surgery, I had several healing issues and I was heading out of town for vacation in 2 weeks, anytime I had a concern his staff got me in same day to make sure everything was ok. Everything is healed and looks amazing. I couldn't of picked a better Dr.. His staff was always smiling and friendly on the phone and in office.

Dr. Bautista performed a breast revision in order to decrease persistent neck/back pain and other associated complaints. Dr. Bautista understood that I was interested in gaining my health and strength back by relieving pain. He did not try to convince me to undergo added procedures for “cosmetic effects” during my consult as other surgeons had. I appreciated his understanding and support for my intention. Extremely satisfied with results. The office and nursing staff were very supportive and kind as well.

I’ve got the Fraxel preformed on my face with Kristine and she made sure I was comfortable throughout the entire treatment. Dr. B prescribed me a prescription to prep as well as a numbing cream for the day of. I arrived one hour earlier than my scheduled time to allow the numbing cream sit and settle. Then, I had the Fraxel laser pass over several times and thankfully I had a cooling tube right by me which made each pass, at the more painful setting, much easier to tolerate. I’m still in the recovery phase, but it’s not as bad as a chemical peel. I have slight flaking, and it just look like I’m more flushed than usual. Looking forward to see the results over the next few months and can’t wait to go back for maintenance. Just make sure you follow the pre and post instructions to a T

Is Ear Pinning Right for Me?

Otoplasty can be performed on all ages; however, it is common among young children and is suggested prior to reaching elementary school. By six years of age, this procedure is safe to be completed on a child. If you are self-conscious about the look and shape of your ears because they are misshapen or protrude outward, otoplasty can be considered to attain a natural-looking appearance. If you or your child suffer from a damaged earlobe, you are also a candidate for cosmetic ear surgery.

How much does ear surgery cost?

Ear surgery costs vary depending on the procedure being performed (ear pinning, shaping, earlobe repair, or a combination). Once our specialists have listened to your concerns and goals, we can create a personalized treatment plan and estimate the costs. To help you focus on the results you want rather than the financial aspect, our team accepts various payment methods, and we can assist you in finding low-interest medical financing.

Will the results of ear surgery last?

Typically, the ears grow faster than other parts of the face and body, which is why ear surgery can often be performed on younger patients with long-lasting results. Our specialists will evaluate your ears and discuss realistic expectations, including how long the results are likely to last. While gravity and age may affect other parts of the face and body, the impact on the ears is generally minimal. However, another surgery may be necessary if significant changes occur due to injury.

How old should my child be to consider otoplasty?

On average, children around 5 – 6 years old are ideal candidates for otoplasty. By this age, the ears are usually fully developed, but the cartilage and tissue remain soft, making them easier to shape. This age is also beneficial because it allows children to avoid potential teasing from classmates early in school. While many otoplasty patients are young children, our team also performs otoplasty on adults.

Do I need to have both ears done or just one?

Many issues, such as large or protruding ears, affect both ears, which means both may need to be addressed. During the procedure, our specialists will adjust both ears to make them as symmetrical as possible. However, if only one ear needs correction, its shape and size will be adjusted to match the other ear. We will inform you during your consultation whether one or both ears should be corrected.

What about fixing stretched or torn earlobes?

The trend of oversized earrings and ear gauges has made earlobe reconstruction a popular procedure. If you're considering earlobe surgery, schedule a consultation with our team. We will assess the damage and discuss the best approach to restore your earlobes.
